When your HP drop below 0 for any reason, you fall to the ground unconscious and start bleeding. Your HP will keep going down until it reaches -20, at which point you are taken to recover by your brothers in arms. When this happens, you will recover from your wounds and end up at your starting room.
When you return into shape, you'll notice that you have lost some skills and experience. Skill losses are random, but never more than 5 points of each; experience loss is 1/5 (20%) of your current experience.
You will not have your equipment or gold on yourself when you recover, with the exception of autoloading items. They will stay on ground where you bleed, in the same way NPCs' equipment is dropped when their corpses root. It is probably a very good idea to return to that place soon after recovering, to ensure someone doesn't take your equipment.
